Today, Oct. 28, is the 88th anniversary of the dedication ceremony for the Los Angeles Fox Studio lot. Below are aerial photographs of the lot, also known as Movietone City, showing how it has transformed over the decades.

I love behind-the-scenes photography. The Fox Archives has gorgeous portraits, scene stills and Fox lot photography, but the photographs that depict what happens off camera are my personal favorite.

FOX Broadcasting Company (FBC) debuted on Oct. 9, 1986, with “The Late Show with Joan Rivers” – a queen of comedy deployed to take on NBC’s king of late night, Johnny Carson. Rivers’ inaugural quartet of iconoclast guests included Cher, David Lee Roth, Elton John and Pee-Wee Herman, and the show was gangbusters.

June 5, 1989, BEIJING – Around the world, the image of a man staring down tanks in China’s Tiananmen Square became etched in our collective memory. The live CNN broadcast was a journalism milestone. Like any competitive newsman, Rupert Murdoch marveled at the accomplishment but must have been rankled by his rival’s success in breaking the story.

A storyboard is a sequence of drawings representing the shots planned out by production, typically with some direction and dialogue, though it all depends on the film and the artist. We have a wonderful and wide variety of storyboards in our art department collection. Here is a selection of storyboards from different genres of 20th Century Fox films.

In memory of Gene Wilder, known for making us laugh, I'm sharing a few of my favorite photographs of him breaking character and having a few laughs of his own on the set of “Young Frankenstein,” distributed by 20th Century Fox Film in 1974.

When the permanent buildings on the Twentieth Century Fox lot were constructed in 1928, the bungalows and the dressing-room buildings were all located on the southeast corner of the lot close to the Tennessee Gate, which served as the main entrance to the studio. Those continued to be used, but the biggest stars were given suites in the brand new Building 86 located near the Commissary, which soon became known as the "Stars' Building."

The Caped Crusader made his feature film debut 50 years ago in “Batman,” produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox Film. The superhero movie was released on July 30, 1966, in Austin, Texas. Here are the original publicity posters, including those for French, German and British audiences.

The 2001 sci-fi action movie “Planet of the Apes,” produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox Film, was adapted from the 1968 classic of the same name. It was released in U.S. theaters on July 27, 2001, and went on to finish as one of the top 10 worldwide grossing movies of the year.

Building #69 on the West Pico Boulevard Fox lot is a rather inauspicious little structure that has a fun (and even glamorous) history, about which even most people at 20th Century Fox Film studio are unaware.
