Heritage

While the film experienced a few production challenges, some of the most spectacular sets were created for “Cleopatra,” which premiered in New York City on June 12, 1963. The impressive artistry that went into the recreation of Rome and Egypt for this movie, produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox Film, was rewarded with an Academy Award win in Art Direction (Color).

Tens of thousands of stunning photographs belong to this film, which starred Elizabeth Taylor. Below are a few of my favorite of the sets, in all their glory.

The Fox Archives is mandated to collect, catalog, preserve and make accessible the following assets of the 20th Century Fox studios: props, set decoration, photographs, art department and publicity materials from our film and television productions, and from the 20th Century Fox studio itself. We work primarily with internal Fox groups but also from time to time with outside organizations such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry.
