While STAR has for some time been India’s entertainment leader, it moved aggressively into the sports market following 21CF’s full acquisition of its pan-Asian sports joint venture, ESPN STAR Sports (ESS), in 2012.

Star India’s revolutionary mobile entertainment product, hotstar, launched in early 2015 and has grown to boast more than 40,000 hours of content across drama, movies and sports, including cricket, football, kabaddi and local leagues. Today, the first day of a three-day global convention covering media and entertainment in India called FICCI FRAMES 2016, Star CEO Uday Shankar announced that hotstar has been downloaded 50 million times and that it will be rolled out to the rest of the world in the coming months.
